When windows are actually worth replacing

Plenty of windows get replaced years before they need to be, and a few get left far too long. The honest signals are these: condensation between the panes, which means the seal has failed and no amount of cleaning will fix it; frames that have gone soft or rotted at the sill; sashes that will not stay up, or that you have to fight to open; and a draught you can feel with the back of your hand on a windy day with the window shut.

What is not a reason on its own: a single cracked pane, or a house that feels cold. A cracked pane can often be glazed. A cold house is frequently an attic insulation problem wearing a window costume. We will tell you that at the consultation rather than sell you eighteen windows you did not need.

The one situation where waiting genuinely costs you is rot. Once water is getting past the frame and into the framing behind it, every season you wait adds carpentry to the job.

Full-frame replacement or insert — and why it matters

This is the decision that separates a window job that lasts from one that does not, and most homeowners are never told there is a choice.

An insert (or pocket) replacement leaves your existing frame in place and fits the new window inside it. It is quicker, cheaper, keeps your interior and exterior trim untouched, and is the right call when the existing frame is genuinely sound. The trade-off is glass area — you lose an inch or so around the perimeter, which is noticeable on smaller windows.

A full-frame replacement takes everything back to the rough opening: frame, sill, trim. It is the only honest option when there is rot, when the opening is out of square, or when the original frames were never properly flashed. It costs more and takes longer, and it is the only way to actually fix water getting in rather than hiding it.

We measure and tell you which one your house needs. If a competitor quotes you a whole-house insert job without looking at the sills, that is worth a second opinion.

Frame materials, honestly compared

• Vinyl — the volume choice for good reason: no painting, strong thermal performance, and the best price for the performance. Modern welded vinyl is a different product from the vinyl of the 1990s. Colour options are more limited, and very dark exteriors need to be specified carefully.
• Fiberglass — expands and contracts at nearly the same rate as the glass it holds, so the seals stay under less stress over decades. Stronger and more dimensionally stable than vinyl, paintable, and priced above it.
• Wood with an exterior cladding — real wood inside for the look, aluminium or fiberglass outside so you are not painting it. This is what tends to go into the older homes and the architectural-review streets.
• Composite — engineered blends that aim for fiberglass stability at closer to vinyl pricing.

What actually matters for energy in this climate

Northern Virginia is a mixed climate — genuinely cold snaps and genuinely humid summers — so both numbers on the label matter, and salespeople usually only talk about one.

U-factor measures how much heat escapes. Lower is better, and it is the number that matters most in January. Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) measures how much of the sun’s heat comes through the glass. Lower keeps a west-facing room from cooking in August; higher is welcome on a north face in winter.

The practical upshot is that the right glass package is not identical on every elevation of your house. A south- and west-facing wall benefits from a lower SHGC than the shaded north side. Any installer who quotes one identical spec for every opening has not thought about your house.
