Short answer: every GAF Timberline shingle comes with a Lifetime limited warranty, but the part that matters is how long the coverage stays non-prorated and whether the installation itself is covered. A standard GAF warranty is non-prorated for 10 years and never covers workmanship. The three enhanced warranties, System Plus, Silver Pledge and Golden Pledge, push the non-prorated period to 50 years, and the top two add GAF-backed workmanship coverage: 10 years on Silver Pledge and 25 years non-prorated on Golden Pledge (15 and 30 years on Timberline UHDZ and AS II shingles). Only a GAF Master Elite contractor can offer Golden Pledge; Silver Pledge is limited to GAF Certified Plus and Master Elite contractors. Sunshine Contracting is GAF Master Elite, a certification held by roughly the top 2% of roofing contractors, so all three enhanced warranties are available on the roofs we install.

What “non-prorated” actually means for you
This is the number to look at first. During the non-prorated period, if the shingles have a manufacturing defect, GAF supplies the replacement materials and pays the full reasonable cost of labor to install them. After it ends, labor is no longer covered and GAF’s material contribution shrinks every year based on how long the roof has been in service. On a standard warranty that period is 10 years. On System Plus, Silver Pledge and Golden Pledge it is 50 years, which for most homeowners is the rest of the time they will own the house.
Why workmanship coverage is the part most warranties skip
Most roof failures we see in Northern Virginia are installation problems, not shingle problems: a cracked pipe boot, a valley that was never lined, step flashing that was caulked instead of replaced. A shingle-only warranty does nothing for any of those. Silver Pledge adds 10 years of GAF-backed workmanship coverage and Golden Pledge adds 25 years non-prorated, and that coverage is issued and backed by GAF itself, not by the installer, so it does not depend on the roofing company still being around. It is the reason we point homeowners to Golden Pledge when the budget allows.

GAF roof warranty questions we get asked
Is the GAF Golden Pledge warranty worth it?
For a roof you plan to keep, usually yes. Golden Pledge is the top GAF warranty we can offer, with 25 years of non-prorated GAF-backed workmanship coverage, a GAF inspection of the finished roof, and the same 50-year non-prorated material coverage as System Plus. It costs more than System Plus, and it requires at least five qualifying GAF accessories and a Master Elite installer. If you expect to sell within a few years, System Plus with our own 10-year workmanship warranty is the more economical choice.
Does a GAF roof warranty transfer to the next owner?
Yes, once. The new owner must notify GAF in writing within one year of buying the home. If the sale happens within the first 20 years after installation, the new owner gets the same coverage you had, including the remaining non-prorated period on System Plus, Silver Pledge and Golden Pledge. After 20 years, coverage for the new owner is reduced to two years. GAF handles transfers by email with proof of the sale date.
What is the difference between System Plus, Silver Pledge and Golden Pledge?
All three give you 50 years of non-prorated coverage on GAF materials and cover tear-off and disposal when a covered failure requires them. System Plus stops there and can be offered by any GAF Certified, Certified Plus or Master Elite contractor. Silver Pledge adds 10 years of workmanship coverage (15 on Timberline UHDZ and AS II) and requires a GAF Certified Plus or Master Elite contractor. Golden Pledge raises that to 25 years non-prorated (30 on UHDZ and AS II) with prorated coverage for life after that, adds a GAF inspection, and is Master Elite only.
What does a GAF roof warranty not cover?
Strictly speaking, GAF’s warranties are not voided by a bad installation; the warranty stays in effect but GAF is not liable for damage that has a cause other than a manufacturing defect, or, on Silver and Golden Pledge, an installation error. GAF’s own exclusion list includes inadequate attic ventilation, damage from products not sold by GAF, damage to or caused by rooftop equipment such as satellite dishes, skylights and air-conditioning units, foot traffic, ice damming outside the leak-barrier area, and storm damage above the covered wind speed. Two housekeeping rules matter too: an enhanced warranty only takes effect once it is registered and the contractor is paid in full, and GAF must hear about a problem within 30 days of you noticing it. We install the full GAF system to specification, size the ventilation to GAF’s requirements and register the warranty for you.
Who registers the warranty and when?
We do. GAF requires the contractor to register an enhanced warranty within 45 days of installation, and you should receive the warranty document from GAF within 60 days; if you have not, tell us and we will chase it. Keep that document with your closing papers. A new owner transfers it by emailing GAF within a year of the sale with proof of the purchase date.
