Insert or full-frame: the decision that sets your price
An insert replacement fits the new window inside your existing frame. It is quicker and cheaper, keeps your trim untouched, and is the right call when the existing frame is sound. A full-frame replacement takes everything back to the rough opening: frame, sill, and trim. It costs more, and it is the only honest option when there is rot, when the opening is out of square, or when the original windows were never properly flashed. This single choice moves a quote more than any brand decision, and a company that quotes you without checking which one your openings need is guessing.
Glass package
Double-pane with low-E coatings and gas fill is the sensible baseline here. Northern Virginia is a mixed climate, so both label numbers matter: U-factor for keeping heat in through January, and solar heat gain coefficient for keeping a west-facing room from cooking in August.
