The home and the scope

This two-story home in Springfield, in Fairfax County, had tan vertical siding and a brown shingle roof. The project replaced the siding with James Hardie board and batten in Arctic White, added black gutters and installed a new GAF roof in Charcoal.

Board and batten is a vertical profile: wide fiber cement panels with narrow battens over the seams. The original siding on this home was vertical too, so the new siding keeps those lines while changing the material and the color.

What to look at in these photos

Look at how the battens line up from the upper story to the lower one, how the siding meets the roofline, and how the black gutters and window frames read against the white siding. On a vertical profile, straight and evenly spaced battens are the detail that shows the quality of the installation.
