A Falls Church dining room: two old doors out, two custom doors in

These Falls Church homeowners first had a door installed by us several years earlier and came back for a bigger project. The dining room bump-out had a large sliding glass door and a single patio door. Both came out and were hauled away.

In their place went two custom units. The single door is flat, flush, smooth fiberglass, pre-finished black outside and primed inside, built with an oversized jamb depth that was confirmed at the final measurement. The larger opening, where the slider had been, got a custom oversized patio door with a deep jamb and a pre-finished white interior, trimmed with new casing to match the existing trim. The contract set up a visit with Ryan, our owner, at the design center so the homeowners could review styles, hinges, hardware and colors.

What is an oversized jamb depth?

The jamb is the frame the door hangs in, and its depth has to match the thickness of the wall. Stock doors come with standard jamb depths; a thicker wall needs a deeper jamb so the frame lines up with both the inside and outside finishes. It is measured and confirmed before the door is ordered.

Can a door be one color outside and another inside?

Yes. Many doors are finished separately on each side. The Falls Church entry above is pre-finished black on the outside and primed inside so it can be painted to suit the room, and the patio door came with a pre-finished white interior.
