What are the parts of a window?

Windows are comprised of several parts that are common to all types of windows and then some specific parts that are found only on specific window types. Some of the common elements of a window include: the glass, the frame (the precisely measured opening created by the head, jamb and sill and holds the window sash), the head (the piece running horizontally along the top of a window), the sill the primary horizontal piece at the bottom of the frame), the jamb (the pieces that form the sides of the frame, the sash (the assembly of pieces that form the track that allows the window to go up and down), the grills (the pieces that separate the window into smaller frames), the balance (a weight installed inside the frame of a window that acts as counterbalance when the window is opened and closed) and the casings (the exposed framing that surrounds a window and seals the area between the window frame and the wall of a house).
