How much are new gutters on an Alexandria home?
Expect $2,000 to $6,000 installed for a typical house. The bigger the gutter and downspout, the more guards, and the more soft fascia found behind the old gutter, the closer a job gets to the top of that range. Other sizes, colors and guard options are available, so reach out if you don’t see what you want.
- Gutter size, 5-inch or 6-inch
- Downspout size, standard 2×3 or oversize 3×4
- Leaf guards, and which kind
- Fascia repair found when the old gutters come down

An Alexandria siding and gutter job
This Alexandria house was built before 1978 and still had wood siding. The signed contract covered James Hardie lap siding in Cedarmill texture and Monterey Taupe, with HardieWrap and fanfold insulation under it, aluminum capping on the fascia, frieze and rake boards, and a full set of new gutters. The homeowner confirmed the colors in writing: Monterey Taupe siding and musket brown gutters.
The contract called for every gutter to be replaced with 6-inch seamless K-style on hidden hangers, draining into 3×4 downspouts. The old gutter guards were thrown out, and E-Z Lock steel screen guards went on sections of the new gutters. Two notes on the work order shaped the layout: a gutter at the back was redirected to the left of the greenhouse, and the upper-level downspout runs down onto the roof into the lower gutter.

Should you replace gutters when you re-side?
Usually, yes. The gutters and downspouts have to come off the house for the siding to go on, so the choice is between putting the old ones back up or hanging new ones. The siding work order asks which one you want: haul the old gutters away, or detach and reset them at the right pitch. On the Alexandria job above, the old gutters went to the dumpster and new 6-inch gutters went up after the siding and trim.
Can an upper downspout drain onto a lower roof?
It can, and on this Alexandria house it does: the work order calls for the upper-level downspout to run down onto the roof into the lower gutter. Where it lands and which way the lower gutter carries the water get decided at the estimate, with the roof in front of us. The same goes for rerouting around an addition, a deck or, here, a greenhouse.
E-Z Lock or MicroGuard for street trees in Alexandria?
Match the guard to the canopy over your roof. The house above has E-Z Lock: steel screen, powder-coated, clipped into the gutter so the shingles stay undisturbed. It handles a moderate leaf load, though you may still clear it off once in a while. If big oaks or maples hang over the roof, MicroGuard’s fine aluminum filter is the better fit, and only that setup, on new gutters with 3×4 downspouts, qualifies for the 10-year clog-free warranty. Details: E-Z Lock vs. MicroGuard.
Do Alexandria HOAs review gutter colors?
Some do, especially when the gutter color changes, as it would with musket brown. We supply the product data sheets and manufacturer color names. We work closely with the committees, we have a great relationship with plenty of HOAs, and it has never been a problem for us.
Alexandria gutter questions
Do you bury downspout drain lines?
No. Sunshine Contracting does not do trenching or run water through corrugated pipe. We set where each downspout discharges at the estimate.
What gutter color goes with taupe siding?
There is no single answer. The Alexandria homeowner on this page paired Monterey Taupe Hardie siding with musket brown gutters and confirmed both colors in writing when the signed contract was returned.
Does a house built before 1978 change the job?
Yes. Federal lead rules cover homes built before 1978, so the work order flags it, as it did for this Alexandria house. Sunshine Contracting is an EPA Lead-Safe Certified Firm.
