When appearance matters, many homeowners look to cedar shake shingles for their roof and get the added benefit of durability.  There are different levels of quality in cedar shake shingle products – cedar shakes come in medium weight or heavy weight.  Depending on what you choose also affects the warranties available with the shakes.  The natural, not treated shakes have no warranty.  Pressure Treated Medium Shakes carry a 40 yr warranty, Pressure Treated Heavy Shakes carry a 50 yr warranty, while Fire Treated Shakes carry a 40 or 50 yr warranty, depending on which weight is chosen. The fire treatment option makes the cedar shakes a Class C fire coding – this is an additional cost/option.

Cedar Shake - Maintenance Required

Sunshine Contracting purchases Anbrook cedar shakes.  Anbrook produces their shakes from lumber that companies deem as unusable to support a total resource utilization model. When installed properly, shake shingles can provide years of weather protection, although they do require more maintenance than other types of roofing materials. Cedar shake roofs should be sealed every 5-10 years in order to protect the lifespan of the shingles. Periodic cleaning is also necessary to keep the roof free of fungus.

Installation Difference

Installing cedar shake roofing shingles is also different than asphalt shingles in that a solid underlayment is not usually used. Special wood shake underlayments are used in order to keep the roof and shingles properly ventilated. Installation of cedar shake roofing also required the use of special nails and, when used, special ridge cap shingles.
