Additions

When it comes to home additions, the possibilities are only limited by your imagination. As more and more homeowners look to put their personal stamp on the place where they spend much of their time, the idea of creating additional space within the bounds of property has become more attractive and more feasible.

More than Just a House

Over the years, houses have evolved into more than just a “home”. They’ve become offices, day care centers, old age care facilities, art studios, and residences for family members returning to the “nest” (this time with kids of their own). With all of those uses possible, the desire (some would say need) for home additions is growing every day. But there are some key decisions you must make before deciding on the right home addition for you.

Determine Priorities

First, think about the most pressing need of your home with regards to space. Do you need a quiet spot to “get away” without leaving your home, perhaps a modest space to meditate? Do you need something large enough for the whole family to enjoy and spend quality time together? Is there a child on the way or perhaps a child who is now old enough for his or her own room? Do you have a beautiful backyard and months of sunny skies of which you want to take full advantage? Is there a basement area that could serve a more useful purpose than just a place to do laundry?

Once you determine how you wish to use the space, consider how to incorporate your ideas into the existing space. This might require the help of a construction specialist or home design expert. They can give helpful suggestion regarding the aesthetic and practical possibilities and limitations of the additions. For instance, if you’re considering an additional bedroom for an older child or a child that is moving back home, should you include a separate entrance or does the space need to be connected to the rest of the home’s electrical system?

Seamless Connection

Next, it’s important to make the space appear as seamlessly connected to the rest of the house as possible. Again, this is where a designer or construction expert (or both) come in. They can help you avoid the mistakes that make an addition stand apart from the rest of the house and, in some cases, lower the value of the home on the resale market. When it comes to home additions, the worst possible scenario is that they actually look like home additions.
